The rise of the subscription economy has significantly reshaped consumer behaviour, altering how people interact with products and services across various industries.

From streaming services like Netflix to subscription boxes for beauty products and even cars, the model has become deeply ingrained in the modern marketplace. But what exactly is driving this shift, and how is it changing the way consumers think, shop, and spend? Let’s find out.

Expectations are high

Subscriptions have boomed over the past few years, permeating nearly every aspect of modern living. According to Juniper Research, the total transaction value of the global subscription economy in 2024 is $593 billion, with a projected 68% market growth between 2024 and 2028. But with this rise in popularity comes tougher competition, and it goes without saying that your subscription offering needs to stand out. A simple subscribe and save model is no longer enough to earn customer loyalty – consumers expect personalisation, flexibility and a positive user experience.

Value for money is a driving sales

It’s probably no coincidence that the subscriptions boom coincided with the cost of living crisis – many consumers are more conscious of their spending habits and looking to save a few pounds wherever possible. Naturally, consumers on a higher income are more likely to pay for a premium subscription service, but value for money is a key factor for all income levels.

According to research carried out by Internet Retailing, a quarter of people say that value for money is the main reason for signing up to a subscription service, and this applies to all types of subscriptions from clothing to software. In addition, a quarter of consumers sign up to an annual payment for free or cheap deliveries, showing that delivery perks are also a key reason for purchasing a subscription.

Convenience is a priority

What makes subscriptions so appealing to consumers is the convenience they offer. The set-it-and-forget-it mentality of subscription services speaks to our love of convenience, and loyal customers are increasingly favouring the ease of this type of purchase. Retailers should keep this in mind when designing checkout processes or implementing subscription integrations into their ecommerce websites, ensuring that the user journey is as quick and as seamless as possible from start to finish.

Subscriptions may change the way we consume fashion

While subscriptions in the fashion sector are still less common than in the cosmetics, grocery and software industries, they still account for 6% of the global market. We’re slowly starting to see a shift in the way we consume fashion, footwear and accessories thanks to brands like Cocoon, Rent The Runway and Fabletics. This model works particularly well for designer fashion pieces, making luxury items more accessible to the average person while promoting circular fashion to appease the more eco-conscious consumer.

Subscriptions reduce decision fatigue

In a world overflowing with choices, decision fatigue is a real phenomenon that affects consumer behaviour. Subscriptions simplify the decision-making process by offering a curated selection of products or services, eliminating the need for consumers to continuously search for and choose among countless options. This streamlined process not only saves time but also reduces the cognitive load on consumers, making them more likely to stick with a service that consistently meets their needs with little thought or effort on their part.

Flexibility is more important than ever

With the rise of subscriptions comes higher expectations – consumers expect great levels of flexibility in exchange for their loyalty. This is proven by research carried out by RetailX and referenced in the SubX Subscription Report 2024, which found that customers want the ability to customise their subscriptions, adjust frequency, or pause/resume services according to their changing needs and circumstances.

Retailers should use customer feedback to gain insights into the ever evolving needs, preferences and expectations of their subscribers, and understand what their subscribers value in a subscription service.

AI can play a pivotal role in optimising customer engagement and loyalty initiatives, allowing brands to analyse vast amounts of data, predict customer behaviour, and deliver personalised experiences at scale.

Subscribers are seeking a sense of community

Perhaps what is central to the success of subscriptions is the recognition of customers as valued members of a community, rather than merely transactional entities. The Belong Report penned by Sid Lee in 2020 demonstrated that GenZers are shaping their sense of self not through their families or local groups, but primarily through online communities.

The report found that 79% of members would participate in an initiative by a brand if that brand was connected to their community, and 90% would try to get others to join. These days, brands need to strive to deliver more than just products – they need to deliver memorable experiences. Experiences that cultivate a sense of belonging among subscribers, whether it be through exclusive offers/products, member portals or community-driven initiatives like ambassador programs.
