Here come the girls

June 25, 2014

After a recent discussion on Women in Digital it was apparent that it wasn’t the easiest subject to acquiesce. Most of the women I spoke to after writing the article had the same issues I had – you battle an inner turmoil and end up back at the start.

However, it’s good to see websites like www.madewithcode.com coming into fruition. The aim of the website? Get young girls into coding. This is the type of thing we would like to see more of. It’s not saying boys can’t join in, it merely recognises that females need to be targeted and introduced into the vast world of coding in a different way.

As a Woman in Digital myself I thought I’d give it a bash. I tried “Avatar” first, the idea is that you can connect and create shapes and by using the x and y values can re-position them. You can also manipulate sizing by giving it a numeric value and the final piece of the puzzle is the ability to colour. Afterwards you are able to share via social media your achievements (You’re damn right I did!).

I also gave “Beats” a go. This helps you to see how to change rhythmic time as well as adding beats of your own – seen by the coloured circles to the left. This one will take me a little longer to master!

Overall the projects are engaging and offer different ability levels and as you advance there are more projects for you to complete.

Made with code also highlights it’s mentors and inspirational female coders so young females have someone to look up to and strive to be like.

“If girls are inspired to see that Computer Science can make the world more beautiful, more usable, more safe, more kind, more innovative, more healthy, and more funny, then hopefully they will begin to contribute their essential voices… Today, less than 1% of girls are majoring in CS. Tomorrow, we can make that number go up.”

The future is digital and here come the girls.
